The Original Resinator is Your #1 Kief Tumbler Solution

Why Make Kief or Dry Sift?

Having a quality kief tumbler can make a huge difference for your business’s bottom line. Making kief from flower, or its more refined cousin which is known as dry sift, is extremely easy with an Original Resinator XL or Resinator OG machine. Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, kief is a mixture of trichomes and very small bits of plant matter, whereas dry sift is a cleaned up version of kief that’s better suited for pressing into rosin, pre-rolls, and many other profitable SKUs. Originally this process was done with a kief box, which contains one or more mesh screens to help filter out undesirable organic debris. Nowadays, businesses can simply use our patented dry sift tumbler to get to a better end product significantly faster, and with less labor. When you buy an Original Resinator, it’s the only tumbler you’ll ever need to make a wide range of mechanically separated products. No matter the secondary refinement or downstream application desired, as a post harvest and pre-processing apparatus, a Resinator is going to be the most complimentary tool in your arsenal.

How a Dry Sift Tumbler Works

Whereas other kief tumblers use dry ice or no cooling mechanism at all, The Original Resinator’s patented Cryo-Sieve® process utilizes liquid CO2 to enable any operator to quickly and gently remove the trichomes from sugar leaf, trim, or buds without damaging them. All you have to do is pick your desired screen size for your Resinator drum, insert your plant material, and let the system run. You can use dry, wet, or frozen starting material to make everything from traditional dry sift to specialty live sifts too. This creates a much higher quality dry sift, which in turn nets a higher shelf price or resale rate depending on who your end purchaser is. To increase your efficiency even more, extra drums can be purchased to swap quickly for different batches or to further refine your sift or for biomass reduction applications. To Use or Not to Use Dry Ice

Even though old school extractors tend to get stuck in their ways, we never suggest using dry ice when making kief or dry sift (unless you are incorporating color remediation techniques in secondary refinements). Dry ice, which is a solid form of CO2 in fact, can be as cold as -109°F and easily damages or bruises trichomes. When using a dry sift tumbler or a kief tumbler (which are essentially the same thing, depending on the level of trichome cleaning) dry ice can make the final product come out significantly more green instead of a tan or blonde color, which severely affects the shelf appeal of sift rosin especially. This is due to macerated plant particulates and contaminates that are pulverized during the process when dry ice is used. At the end of the day the goal is to remove as much plant matter as possible from the kief to make a more potent and flavorful output.

How Long the Entire Process Takes

Depending on what your desired final product is—which can range from food-grade kief for topicals, tinctures, and edibles all the way to true 6 star full-melt dry sift—the process of using one of our premium kief tumblers can take anywhere from 2 to 30 minutes. The longer you tumble, the more yield you will get but sometimes at the expense of some quality. Additionally, the type of mesh screen you use will also dictate what size trichomes come out the other end, so having multiple on hand can be useful depending on the strain you’re running. Lastly, it’s important to note that final refinement to get a 5 or 6 star dry sift can require additional time outside of an Original Resinator system but can be done pretty simply with the right technique.

How to Make The Best Sift Possible

The effectiveness of your dry sift tumbler comes down to a few factors, but the main one to truly deliver the goods is having great starting material. The cannabis or hemp flower used to make sift should be trichome-rich flower or sugar leaves. While you can absolutely make a commercially viable kief or even dry sift with fairly old, low-quality material, to make the best dry sift for rosin or bowl topping, you need to use premium, recently harvested buds or biomass. One popular method is to take top-shelf sugar leaf destined for distillate, sift it very gently for 2-3 minutes in our XL or OG machines, and then sell it as premier kief/sift or turn into a premium solventless SKU, and then send the rest out for hydrocarbon or ethanol extraction.
